Currently, we are working on developing an ultra-efficient combined heat and power plant for Bermuda. It will be a mix of fossil fuel generation (with waste heat extraction to raise efficiency) and renewable resources. The plant will be able to generate electricity (40MWe) into the national grid at more than twice the efficiency currently employed. Additional services will be sea water desalination (1,000,000 gpd or more), chilled water supply for air-conditioning (20,000 tonne or more), and steam distribution to customers, such as hotels. Additionally, this will literally be green technology, with very little, if any, emissions. While proof of concept and initial design have been completed, it remains to be seen if the Island is ready to adopt these strategies for the future. It is hoped that many relevant industries and the public sector will invest jointly.
